The Government has announced changes to the Parent Resident Visa Expression of Interest (EOI) selection process, with a new hybrid selection model taking effect from 5 October 2026.
How does this new model work?
Under this new model, 90% of the EOIs will be selected in date order from the pool, while 10% will continue to be selected through a random ballot. The total number of visas that can be approved in principle each year remains at 2,500.
The first selection under the new hybrid model is scheduled for 10 November 2026.
What are the other announced changes?
Under this new model, EOIs will no longer expire after two years, provided people confirm they still want to remain in the process and keep their information up-to-date. Families will no longer have to pay an additional fee every two years to resubmit their EOI.
People with current EOIs will automatically transition into the new hybrid system on 5 October 2026. They will not need to submit a new EOI.
People with current EOIs will also be notified of their position in the new chronological queue in October 2026.
What does this mean in practice?
This is welcome news for migrants who have made New Zealand their home and gained residence or citizenship, and wish to bring their parents to New Zealand. The new hybrid model means that these people will have a fairer and more predictable selection process.
